Sometimes smaller is better, but most people who have smaller bathrooms like to add the illusion that their bathroom space is indeed bigger. Making a bathroom look larger is easier than you may think it is. Living within a small bathroom space can be frustrating but with the air of a larger bathroom this frustration can be alleviated.
The first method to adding this illusion is in the painting. Use lighter colors, such as white, light blue and even yellow. Some smaller bathrooms have even gotten away with softer colors like natural world colors, sky blue, greens, taupe; these cooler colors recede. The effect of something like sky blue on a ceiling can afford an effect of a higher ceiling. These colors add to depth and make the small space appear to be larger by reflecting light. This also goes for the colors of your sinks, counter tops, toilet bowls and shower curtains. Anything of a darker color makes the small space look even more cramped than it is.

The second thing you want to consider is more lighting. Do not be afraid to put more or better lighting in your bathroom. This can make a huge difference by cutting down the amount of shadows and dark corners of your room. You can do this either by adding track lighting across the ceiling or in some cases placing sconces on the walls. Even some smaller bathrooms include hanging lightings from the ceiling.
Another method for adding the illusion of a bigger space is smaller floor tiles; this increases the look and appearance of the width of the room. As for the walls, if paint is not your sort of thing some people have used stripped wall paper. Vertical stripes have a way of drawing the eye upward giving off the appearance of a higher ceiling. Even sheer window covering can achieve the same effect. This can also accent and enhance the light from the windows.
Also remember to keep the clutter to a minimum in your bathroom. Clutter can add to the making a smaller space look less spacious. Utilize and consolidate the space in your cabinets. Also don't be afraid to add a caddy corner in your shower or over the back of the toilet to house your soaps and shampoos. These small unused negative spaces can make all the difference in the world when you are trying to clear out and make your small bathroom appear larger. Remember it is all an illusion in the end and the trick is just how to utilize and manipulate the small space you have all around you.
